A Camps Bay Pre-Wedding Shoot Photographer’s Notes: Kemmbelly & Josua, Chasing the Last Red Light Before “I Do”
There’s a particular colour that only shows up in the final minute of a Camps Bay sunset — after the gold has burned off and before the blue takes the sky back completely, when the whole coastline seems to be lit from underneath. I’ve seen many a sunsets here, but the one I spent with Kemmbelly and Josua is an afternoon I keep returning to. Not just because the light did something extraordinary, though it did. Because of who they were, standing in it.
Exactly the Couple I Hope to Meet Again
Some sessions remind you why you do this work in the first place. This was one of them. Kemmbelly and Josua arrived easy with each other, unhurried, already so clearly themselves — no performing, no forced angles, just two people who like being near one another. That’s the whole thing I’m always chasing as a photographer: not a pose, but a presence. They gave me that from the first frame. If I could fill my calendar with couples exactly like them, I would, without hesitation.
Loose, Easy, Entirely Themselves
I loved what they wore that evening — modern, loose, comfortable, all soft earthy tones that let the coastline do what it does best without ever competing with it. Nothing stiff, nothing performative. Just fabric that moved with them as they walked, sat on the rocks, laughed at something only the two of them understood. Styling that says “we’re not here to look like a magazine spread, we’re here to be seen as we actually are”. That’s always the shoot I want to be part of.
Watching Them Take It In
Kemmbelly and Josua were already engaged before this evening — the proposal, the yes, all of that had happened weeks before I ever picked up my camera. But there’s a difference between being engaged and *feeling* engaged, and somewhere along that coastline, watching Kemmbelly turn her ring toward the light, I got to witness that gap close in real time. Two days out from their wedding, that was the moment that told me they were ready — not for the party, but for each other.
Chasing the Reds
We’d built the whole shoot around the last light on purpose, and the sky delivered. As the sun dropped toward the water, the gold gave way to something deeper — that brief, almost impossible red that spills across Camps Bay in the final few minutes before dusk. We didn’t pose for it so much as follow it, moving along the coast as the colour shifted, letting them keep talking to each other while I stayed quiet behind the camera. Those last frames, the ones where the sky had gone the colour of embers, are some of my favourites from the whole year.
Why Camps Bay, For This
As a Camps Bay pre-wedding shoot photographer, I’m asked often why I love bringing couples to this stretch of coastline before their wedding day rather than somewhere quieter or more contained. The honest answer is that Camps Bay refuses to be tamed into a backdrop. The mountain holds one side of the frame, the ocean does whatever it wants on the other, and the light changes by the minute — which means there’s no room to overthink a pose. You’re too busy watching the sky to remember to perform for the camera, and that’s exactly the point. A pre-wedding shoot here isn’t rehearsal. It’s a chance to find your rhythm together before the wedding day arrives, so that by the time you’re standing at the altar, being witnessed by a camera already feels familiar.
What Comes Next
In a couple of days, Kemmbelly and Josua will be married at Diamant Estate in Paarl, surrounded by their nearest and dearest among the vineyards. This evening on the coast was the quiet before that — the part nobody else gets to see, where the nerves are softer and the only audience is the sunset. I’ll be there for the next chapter too, and I cannot wait to tell you about it.

A Legacy, Not Just a Gallery
Years from now, Kemmbelly and Josua won’t just have photographs from this evening. They’ll have a memory of exactly how it felt to stand on that coastline two days before their wedding — the salt air, the easy laughter, the ring catching the last red light before the sky let it go. That’s what I’m actually building, every time I pick up my camera. Not the perfect shot, but the true one.
