A Golden Evening on the Atlantic Seaboard: Hannah & Josh’s Pre-Wedding Shoot

There’s a stretch of coastline in Cape Town where the mountain simply refuses to stay in the background — where the Atlantic meets granite meets sky, and everything seems to be lit from within. That’s where we spent Hannah and Josh’s pre-wedding shoot, a couple of days out from their wedding (link to their wedding day photos HERE) at Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek. This time of year, the light along the Atlantic Seaboard is generous almost to a fault. The sun holds on for what feels like forever, stretching golden hour into something closer to a golden evening, and by the time it finally lets go, you’ve almost forgotten to notice how much time has passed.

Finding Their Rhythm

Not every couple is used to being in front of a camera, and that’s completely normal — most people aren’t used to being looked at for a whole afternoon, let alone photographed. My job in those moments isn’t to direct a performance. It’s to help two people find their way back to each other. We talk. We walk. I ask them to notice how they naturally move around one another — who reaches for whose hand first, how they laugh at the same things — and slowly, the self-consciousness falls away. What’s left is just them, comfortable in their own affection, with room to simply be.

With Hannah and Josh, that shift happened almost instantly. They are, quite simply, the sweetest pair — and it showed. There was an ease between them that made the whole evening feel less like a shoot and more like a long, unhurried walk with two people who happen to be completely in love. We found quiet pockets along the coast to just exist in — feet in the sand, the ocean doing its thing beside us — and let the surroundings do some of the work.

Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

And then, of course, there was the mountain. You cannot photograph along this stretch of coastline without the Twelve Apostles insisting on their place in the frame — that great, ancient wall of rock catching the last of the light and turning gold, then pink, then a deep, dusky blue. Even after all these years behind a camera, that particular kind of awe never gets old. Judging by the look on Hannah and Josh’s faces as the sun dropped behind the peaks, it didn’t for them either.

By the time we lost the light completely, we weren’t just two clients and a photographer anymore. We’d found our rhythm together — the same ease and trust that carried straight through to their wedding day, when there was nothing left to figure out, and nothing left to do but simply be together, exactly as they already knew how.
