When Tomoko and Shintaro were planning their honeymoon, a safari in South Africa was at the top of their bucket list. They dreamed of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and what better way to celebrate their love than an intimate honeymoon and safari in the heart of the African bush?
Planning the Perfect Safari Elopement
Planning a trip to South Africa, especially for the first time, can be daunting. The sheer size and diversity of the country can be overwhelming. That’s where I come in—I’m not just a photographer, but also a guide who’s here to assist with everything from choosing the right safari destination to timing your visit perfectly. Sometimes, the internet just isn’t enough; you need someone with “boots on the ground” to provide the local insights that make all the difference.
For Tomoko and Shintaro, I helped them decide where and when to visit. Timing is everything in South Africa, particularly in the bushveld. The dry season, from May to October, is ideal for safaris. Not only are temperatures more comfortable, but the animals are also easier to spot as they congregate around watering holes. This season offers the best chance for incredible wildlife sightings and, of course, stunning photographs.
Meeting in Hoedspruit: The Adventure Begins
I met Tomoko and Shintaro on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Hoedspruit. They were so excited to finally be in South Africa, and we were all equally thrilled about the adventure ahead. The lodge was alive with animals—zebras, bushbucks, kudus, and even porcupines wandered through the lush gardens. While the greenery attracts these magnificent creatures, it does pose a challenge for the lodge’s garden maintenance!
Language barriers can be tricky, but thanks to Google Translate, we were able to have some fantastic conversations. It was fascinating to exchange stories about our respective countries and cultures. Their excitement was contagious, and I could easily see why they had chosen South Africa for such a special trip.
Capturing the Magic: Our First Safari Drive
As the afternoon sun began to dip, we set out on our first game drive at around 3 PM. After some time we were rewarded beautiful sightings of elephants, hippos, and kudus. One of the highlights was stopping at a scenic lookout point to watch the sunset—a perfect moment for some candid photos and a chance to stretch our legs. There’s something exhilarating about being out in the bush with no fences, just the vast, untamed wilderness around you.
Early Morning Adventures and Stunning Wildlife Encounters
The following morning, we rose before the sun to catch the early-morning light—prime time for both photography and wildlife activity. As the sun began to rise, we captured some moody, atmospheric shots that truly captured the magic of the moment. Then, just as the light started to fill the sky, we encountered a group of giraffes—a species Tomoko and Shintaro had been hoping to see. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and we captured some stunning images with these gentle giants.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Thank you, Tomoko and Shintaro, for allowing me to be a part of your South African adventure. It was a privilege to share this incredible experience with you, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to see my beautiful country through your eyes.
Also a big thank you to Jason from Pridelands, our awesome guide and our hosts Patrick and Nathalie at Lindiwe Safari Lodge.
